Legislative Advocacy - What have you done for me lately?

Advocacy (def): The act of pleading or arguing in favor of something, such as a cause, idea, or policy; active support.

Many see the PTA/PTSA at our school as a group of dedicated volunteers helping out in classrooms, events, and certainly fundraising. I write to you to provide an additional perspective. The PTA is so much more. I cannot list all of the critical areas the PTA touches for our kids- from arts to science, technology, field trip support and even school supplies. That list is just a small glimpse into the critical role of the PTA. What I’d like to talk about is an important area that your PTA is continuously active in - that is legislative advocacy. So, exactly what is this?

The first mission statement of the PTA is “to support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children”. It is also a purpose of the California PTA to “secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.” Your PTA legislative advocate, along with the support of a strong membership, will consistently work to form a powerful force to promote laws and public policy that are best for our children and youth.

So, what should you expect from your legislative advocate? You can expect to receive updated
information on issues, laws or actions that will affect our children and schools. Your child will have a voice in Sacramento on issues and subjects that directly affect their education. You, as a parent and community member, will have a voice with legislators through your legislative advocate on educational and other issues that directly affect our children. As your legislative advocate, I may be one person delivering the message, but it is a message crafted by the needs and voices of all our parents and children.

I am honored to represent our school, our district, our students and families in Sacramento. The belief of the PTA is “every child, one voice.” Together, we become the one voice for our children. I take that responsibility very seriously and hope you will join with me this year and beyond to advocate for every child with your membership in the PTA. Together we all make a lasting impact on our kids. If we provide the tools for success, our kids will succeed beyond their wildest dreams.
