PTA Reflections 2016-2017 Theme

posted Jun 12, 2016, 9:45 PM by President Smith PTA

2016-2017 Theme: “What is Your Story?”
PTA Reflections

Get a head start this summer! Think about the theme and create an original piece of artwork, take a photo, compose a song, choreograph a dance, produce a film or write a story about what it means to you. Have fun & be creative! We look forward to seeing your work in September.

Entry forms and complete rule packets will be available at school in September and online. All entries should represent students’ unique creativity—adults are welcome to encourage students but are asked not to assist in any way with their interpretation of the theme or artistic expression. For more information, contact reflections@smithpta.org.

HBCSD Statement about CDE vs Morgan Hill Concerned Parents

posted Feb 28, 2016, 10:46 AM by President Smith PTA

By now you have received information in regards to the court case of  Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association, et al, v. California Department of Education. This decision is allowing the parent group access to ALL student's records going back to 2008.  You may have questions, and I am sure that you will hear some questions from other parents.

Because this is a court decision HBCSD cannot object to the decision.  The parent association filed the suit against the California Department of Education and that is where they will get their information regarding students.  HBCSD will not provide any information, however, the information that we are required to send to the State will be shared.

Of course, there is an opt out for ANY parent who is uncomfortable with their students information being released.  Brief information regarding the case as well as the opt out form are available on our web page in the “Quick Links – Parents” section on the home page labeled Disclosure of Student Records.  Please encourage all of your parents who have concerns to take advantage of this option.

Our principals and I have talked about this in a Leadership Meeting.  Principals will be putting a brief announcement regarding this case in their Newsletters with the directions to the opt out form.

We are attempting to let parents know and provide easy access to the opt out form, however we are also being careful not to create an unnecessary panic.

Some quick facts:
  • This lawsuit was against California Department of Education (CDE) not individual districts so the information will be shared through the CDE.
  • There is nothing HBCSD can do to stop the sharing of information, only parents can through the appropriate opt out form
  • The opt out form must be completed by April 1st
  • Part of the information shared will not be students social security numbers
We would be happy to answer any questions parents or PTA/PTSA may have.
