Dear Smith Families,
We had a great first PTA meeting last week. The Exec Board and some of our Committee Chairs introduced themselves and talked about our plans and ideas for the fall, including our Fall Membership Drive, and fundraising ideas, such as a Read-a-thon and Halloween Costume/Pumpkin Carving Contest.
Some great questions came out of the meeting, including questions about what the Smith PTA does. Members got a better sense of the big picture implications of belonging to our PTA (advocacy on a state level), what the PTA means for different Exec Board members (communication, improving the lives of kiddos), and specifics about where the money goes.
We also had the chance to get live updates from our *AMAZING* Principal, Ms Ashton. She took the time to answer our questions, including information on the hybrid model, school remodel, and picture day. Thank you, everyone, for contributing to the discussion!
Here is what to expect this week:
As part of our fall membership drive, we encourage Smith Surfers to join the PTA on Membership Monday and refer family members. Anyone can join, brothers/sisters, aunts/uncles, grandparents… You name it! We just reached over 100 members – thank you to those who joined already. We can’t do this without your support.
What’s more, teachers whose classes get 100% membership by the end of September will get $100. As of today, Ms Spencer’s and Ms McDermott’s class are neck-and-neck for first place. Shout out to Jenny Olson, VP Membership Extraordinaire, for doing a fantastic job keeping track of it all.
There will be another special Huntington Beach City School District meeting on Tuesday (9/15) at 5 pm. This one will include reports on COVID-19 funds and a presentation from OnPoint, as well as discussions on enrollment and school modernization.
Our first dine out of the year is this week. Support the Smith PTA and your local businesses by getting take out at Miguel’s Jr on Thursday 9/24. You don’t need to print the flyer. All you need to do is mention that this is for the Smith Elementary Fundraiser, and you will get 25% off your meal. Shout out to our *FABOULOUS* Dine Out Chair, Melissa Miles, for setting this up.
In case you missed it, the board voted last week to push back to school night to Wednesday 10/7. It was initially scheduled for this week. There will be two virtual sessions: 6-6:30 pm and 6:40-7:10 pm.
In addition, note that Picture Day, which is usually scheduled around this time of the year, is TBD. The school is working out the details and will follow-up with us once they are set.
The Brainstorming Activity for Reflections is now available on our website. My apologies to you and our Chair, Stephanie Maling, for the delay in getting it up and running. This activity is a great way to get inspiration going on this year’s theme, “I Matter Because…”
That’s it for now – thank you so much for your time, and take care this week!
